Clay Powder and The Five Elements

Our skincare range incorporated Chinese Medicine, particularly the theory of the Five Elements. Each element has a corresponding clay, which links uniquely to each person. Your element could be based on year of birth, emotion or skin type. Therapists can then use our elemental clay powder to create a bespoke treatment for each client

A Little History of Clay

The use of clay powder for skincare dates back centuries, as far back as 2500 B.C. The Ancient Greeks realised the healing and purifying properties of clay and used it to mix with plaster to treat fractures. Ancient Egyptians, who used it to smooth skin. During the First World War, Russian soldiers received 200g of clay every day to heal themselves and their horses of various ailments.

How to Use Elemental Clay Powders

Always mix your clay in a bowl made of glass, porcelain, pottery or wood. Never put it into a metal bowl (except for stainless steel) and avoid plastic wherever possible – the same with your mixing spoon or spatula. This is to avoid oxidisation (ion exchange).

Mix together your chosen clay powder and mix with Aloe Glow . Mix well until it is nice and smooth. Leave the clay on the skin for 15 minutes or sooner if the clay starts to get dry.

When mixed with the Aloe Vera Gel it should be a nice spreadable consistency – not too thick or too thin – a little like the thickness of Greek Yoghurt. Either apply the mixture cold or warm to the skin.

Only warm once, do not keep reheating the same clay. It is best to just mix up the amount for one client to keep it fresh.

Clay powder mixed with water can be used as a hair mask. Just mix them together and apply through the hair and then rinse off after 30 minutes to an hour.
